It is with deepest regret that I tell you about passing of
Paul Castle.  Paul was a bright star in the history of the Astronomical League.  He dedicated endless hours of service to promoting amateur astronomy, and his support of he League was legendary.

He served for decades as president of his local astronomical society, and for years, he also served as the chair of the North Central Region of the Astronomical League (NCRAL).  He ran the League's Book Service for many years, bringing hundreds of great astronomical books to our members at discount prices.   Most recently, he was the chair of the League's Planetary Observing Awards.  He did all of this as a volunteer, with a contagious passion for astronomy.

At a time when the League was starting the National Young Astronomer Award, Paul was so enthusiastic about this that he made sure the North Central Region made a large and timely donation to NYAA to keep this program going.  The NYAA program is a big success thanks to the insight of Paul.  Outstanding young astronomers from across the nation were recognized based on Paul's generous support and that of the NCRAL.

Unfortunately, there are not enough words to properly thank him for all he has done for the League.  Paul Castle was an inspiration to many of us, and he will be sorely missed by all of us.   His obituary can be found online at http://esterdahlmortuary.com/obits/.

Very respectfully,

Bob Gent, President
