Introducing the START PROGRAM
a Popular Astronomy Club Exclusive!
It has been the experience of our club that people who join PAC are interested in seeing the celestial sights for themselves, but most are uncertain of
how to do it or where to begin. Even the act of purchasing a telescope will not guarantee continued growth in the hobby. It is too easy to tire of just perusing the heavens on the off chance that something exciting will pop into view.
Self motivation is a trait somewhat lacking in most of us. We need a purpose, a plan, and a method. We need to feel that each observing period will
result in time well spent. This can be especially true if we have an instrument that requires considerable set-up time.
The START PROGRAM has been designed to ease you into the habit of observing by providing a purpose. Observing skills come only with
experience. An eye trained by observing will see more. Good observing skills reinforce the desire to observe and observing trains the eye to see. It
is a cycle that has to be willed to happen. Given the time and effort it WILL happen. When it does, astronomy can become a joyful, lifelong experience.
The START PROGRAM will require some work on your part, but what is there of
value that doesn't? When you have completed START, it can be shown to the PAC
Board which will evaluate your observations and award you a certificate and a
token of achievement.
